Your own photo behind you on webcam, no green cloth needed

You can put your own photo behind you on webcam without hanging a green cloth. In Cheap Recorder, the Your image background uses a person finder that runs in Chrome on your own computer: it finds you in each frame and puts your photo everywhere else. This post covers what that does well, the photo and light that help it, the exact steps, the messages you may see, and when a cloth is still the better tool.

Your own photo behind you on webcam: how it works without a cloth

A green screen works by colour: every pixel close to the green is swapped for your picture. With no cloth, the recorder needs another way to tell you from your room, and that is the person finder's job. A few details shape the result:

  • The edge is kept a touch inside your outline, and smoothed from one frame to the next so it does not flicker.
  • If someone walks behind you, only the biggest person in the frame is kept.
  • The camera is never zoomed or moved to follow you.

Two ways to put your own photo behind you: the person finder with no cloth, or the green screen tick with a cloth.

Which plans have Your image

None and Blur are on every plan, Free included. Background pictures, Your image and the green screen tick appear on plans that include green screen, which is Creator and up on the standard plans. Creator is $12 a month billed monthly, or $4.99 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial. To see what your plan has, open your name in the top right and look under What you can do on this plan. If you only want to hide a messy room, the post on blurring the background works on every plan.

Pick a photo that fits the frame

Your image is trimmed to fill a 1280 by 720 frame without stretching. That frame is wide, so a wide photo keeps most of what you chose, while a tall phone photo loses its top and bottom. Before you record, look at the preview and check that the part of the photo you care about is still in view.

If Chrome cannot open your file, the recorder says That file is not a picture this browser can open. Save it as JPEG or PNG and choose it again.

Your photo is kept in this browser only and is not uploaded. If Chrome had no room to keep it, you will see Your picture is used for this visit only., and you choose it again next time.

Light yourself so the edges stay clean

Light does more for clean edges than anything else. Light your face from the front: a lamp or a window in front of you, behind the screen, works. Do not sit with a window behind you, because a bright window behind you makes any cutout struggle.

Then look at the edge around you in the preview. If it looks ragged, add light in front before you change anything else, and record a short test to see it the way the file will.

Worked example: a course intro with your own photo

Say you record a short welcome video for a course, with a photo of your workshop behind you instead of your spare room.

  1. Open the recorder in Google Chrome, sign in, and allow the microphone and the camera when Chrome asks.
  2. Under Where to save, press Choose folder... and allow Chrome to edit files there.
  3. Switch on Record my webcam. The Background buttons are greyed out while the webcam is off.
  4. In the Webcam box under What to capture, find Background, press Your image and choose the workshop photo. To swap it later, use Use a different picture... under the buttons.
  5. Pick Webcam only for a talking-head intro, or a screen, window or tab if you will show slides. The background applies to the camera in picture in picture and in Side by side too.
  6. Check the preview. The preview is the recording, so what you see is what the file holds.
  7. Name it Course intro in Name this recording and record a 30-second test. Play it back and look at the edge around you.
  8. Happy with the edges? Record the real take.

Set the background before you start: the recording keeps the one that was on when you pressed Start recording.

When something goes wrong

  • The webcam background could not start on this browser. The person finder could not load, and the choice goes back to None. Check your connection, reload the page, and use an up-to-date Chrome.
  • A second person keeps vanishing. Only the biggest person in the frame is kept, so two people side by side do not both stay. A green cloth does not look for a person, so it suits that case better.
  • The pictures are missing. Your plan does not include green screen; None and Blur still work.

When a green cloth is still worth it

If you already own a green cloth, the green screen tick usually gives cleaner edges than the person finder. Choose a picture first, then tick I have a green screen behind me. It replaces every pixel close to the green, so a green shirt disappears too. The green screen and background blur guide covers that setup step by step.

And if you might want a different photo later, tick Also save every source separately under Options before you start. You then also get the plain webcam file and a copy with the background applied; the post on saving the webcam as its own file shows where they land.

No. Your image is kept in this browser only and is not uploaded.

Can I change the photo after recording?

Not in the main MP4, which keeps the background that was on when you pressed Start recording. With Also save every source separately ticked before you start, you also get the plain webcam file.
