Is 2048 over when the board is full? Not always, tested

Is 2048 over when the board is full? Not always. In the classic game the end comes only when there are no empty spaces and no equal tiles side by side, as Wikipedia's article on 2048 puts it. Evolved 2048 plays the same puzzle on a cube with 54 squares, so a board that looks stuck can hide a way out on a face you are not looking at.

This post shows that on a real full cube, with each step tested in the live game. It covers Evolved and Edge modes; Fun mode merges across faces you cannot see, so it is left out.

Is 2048 over when the board is full? The rule in the game

The game's How to play box states the end in one line. In Evolved mode it reads: "The game ends when all 54 squares are full and no face has two equal tiles side by side." Two things must be true together:

  • every one of the 54 squares holds a tile;
  • no face has two equal tiles side by side.

If either one fails, the game goes on. Full on its own is not enough.

A full front face is not a full cube

You slide only the front face. When it locks, the game says "Nothing moves that way. Try another way, or twist a row." That message is about the front, not about the game. The other five faces may have room, or may hold a pair that the front cannot reach yet.

Turning the whole cube is the tool for that. The How to play box says: "The whole cube turns. Turning is free." Free means no new tile and no change to Moves, so you can look at every face at no cost.

A test: a full cube that still moves

To see this for real, a test put a full board in the game before the page loaded, in Evolved mode, with no empty square anywhere. The front face read, top row first, 2 8 32, then 16 2 8, then 4 16 2. No two equal tiles touch on it, in any row or column. On the right face it placed two 64s side by side in its top row. Every other face had no equal neighbours. Then the test pressed keys and read the game's saved board after each one.

  1. Right arrow: nothing moved. Moves stayed 0 and the game said "Nothing moves that way. Try another way, or twist a row."
  2. Key 1 (twist the top row right): refused with "The cube is full. Merge two tiles on a face to make room before you twist."
  3. Shift and Left: the right face came round to the front, so the two 64s now sat in the front's top row. Moves was still 0.
  4. Right arrow again: the 64s merged into a 128. Score 128, Moves 1.

So the game was not over at any point before the merge, even though all 54 squares were full. The pair was there from the start. It was only on the wrong face.

When a full cube really is over

That same test then ended the game. The merge freed one square, the game added a new tile there, and the cube was full again. This time no face had two equal tiles side by side, so the No moves left box opened.

Evolved 2048 No moves left box over a full cube, reading that all 54 squares are full and no face has two equal tiles side by side

The box repeats the rule and gives one line of advice: "Next time, keep room on one face so a twist can still bring tiles round to their match." The game does not open the box the moment the cube fills. In the test it opened after the move that filled the cube, which is the move that decides it.

Why a twist cannot save a full cube

A twist turns a row or column a quarter turn and carries its tiles to the next face. The game adds a new tile after every twist, and its rule is "A twist needs one empty square for it." On the full test board, key 1 was refused with "The cube is full. Merge two tiles on a face to make room before you twist."

That is why the order matters. On a full cube you can slide, or turn, but you cannot twist until a merge has freed a square. If no face has a pair to slide into, no square gets freed, and the end rule applies.

Edge mode adds a way out

The Edge mode rule has one more clause: the game ends only when "no two equal tiles sit side by side, on a face or across an edge." In Edge mode a slide towards an edge of the front face can merge the tile at that edge with an equal tile just over the edge, in the same row or column.

A second test used a full board with an 8 on the front's top middle square and an 8 on the top face's bottom middle square, the square just over that edge. In Evolved mode, the Up arrow changed nothing. In Edge mode the same board moved: Moves went to 1 and a square was freed. So a board that is dead in Evolved mode can be alive in Edge mode.

A check you can run on a full board

When the front locks and nothing is empty, go through this list, and stop at the first yes:

  1. Front face: do any two equal tiles touch in a row or column? Slide towards them.
  2. Edge mode only: does a front tile at an edge match the tile just over that edge in the same row or column? Slide towards that edge.
  3. Other faces: turn with Shift and an arrow key and look at each face. In the test, Shift and Left brought the right face to the front. Slide when you find a pair.
  4. Nothing found: the game is over.

Because turning is free, step 3 costs nothing. Do it before you start a new game.

How to keep the cube from filling

The game's own advice is to keep room on one face. A free square is what lets a twist work, and a twist is how you carry tiles to their match. Two other posts here go further: why keeping free space beats a high tile, and what to do when no moves are left. For why the cube has 54 squares at all, see how many squares are on a 2048 board.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2048 over when the board is full?

Only if no two equal tiles are side by side. In Evolved 2048 that means on any face, and in Edge mode also across an edge. If one pair exists, you can still move once it is on the front.

Can I twist when every square is full?

No. A twist adds a new tile, so it needs one empty square. The game says "The cube is full. Merge two tiles on a face to make room before you twist."

Does turning the cube use up a move?

No. In the test Moves stayed at 0 after Shift and Left, and no tile was added. The How to play box says turning is free.

Why does the game say "Nothing moves that way"?

The slide you tried would not move or merge any tile on the front face. Try another direction, turn the cube to another face, or twist if there is an empty square.

Is a full board in Edge mode the same as in Evolved mode?

No. Edge mode counts equal tiles across an edge as a move. The same full board that is over in Evolved mode can still slide in Edge mode.
